Non NHS Work

Our practice offers a range of non-NHS administrative services. This work takes place outside our NHS time, and therefore fees are often applicable. Please see the table below.

All forms are completed at the discretion of the GP, and if we are unable to complete your requested form we will contact you.

Specialist Assessments

Our GPs are trained to provide general medical services and support within the NHS framework. Specialist assessments should be undertaken by professionals with specific expertise in those fields.

Therefore, we do not undertake private work that may involve specialist assessments or activities which present a significant risk of vicarious liability. These include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Fitness to fly assessments
  • Clearance for high-risk sports (e.g., mountaineering, skydiving, paragliding)
  • Certification for participation in sporting events (e.g., marathons, triathlons)
  • Diving medicals
  • Medical certifications for extreme sports or adventure travel
  • Driving assessments beyond completing DVLA requests or those listed below
  • Court of Protection Forms, Mental Capacity Act Assessment for Solicitor’s forms (COP1/COP2)
  • Taxi drivers (HFDC)

To have these forms completed, patients are advised to seek independent medical assessments from specialists in the relevant field. These might include:

  • Occupational health specialists
  • Sports physicians
  • Aviation or diving medical examiners
  • Travel medicine clinics
  • Solicitors

Specialist Nurses

Community Midwives

If you think you may be pregnant, arrange to do a pregnancy test via a kit purchased from the pharmacy. If your test is positive, make an appointment to see your doctor who will then refer you to one of the community midwives. Please ensure you make the receptionist aware that you need a first antenatal appointment with the doctor.

The midwife will then make arrangements for your antenatal care. This is usually shared between the midwife, the GP and in some cases, a consultant obstetrician.

Community Nurses

The district nursing team consists of qualified registered nurses and a specialist trained care assistant. They provide skilled nursing care, following an assessment of the individual’s and carers/family members’ needs, to housebound people in their own homes or in residential care.

The district nurses provide specialist community care, which includes the management of wounds, continence, chronic disease, various acute illnesses and cancer. Subsequently, they also undertake many nursing procedures such as dressings, administration of injections, ear care, bowel care and investigative tests. This care is provided in close partnership with the individual, their family/carers, the GPs and allied health professionals and agencies.

The majority of the district nurses’ work takes place in the patient’s own home/residential home.

The district nurses can be contacted on 02380 428488 – Monday to Friday, between 08:30 and 16:30.

Health Visitors

Health visitors are qualified nurses with additional training in child and family health. They advise on a variety of health related issues, but they work mainly with parents, carers and children under the age of 5 advising on all aspects of a child’s well-being and development.

The health visiting service hold Child Health Clinics on the following days:

Every Wednesday between 09:30 and 12:00 at Totton Community Centre

Every first Tuesday of the month between 09:30 and 11:30 at Mulberry Community Centre, Marchwood

The health visiting team can be contacted on 02380 427518.

Practice Nurses

Our practice nurses can treat minor illnesses; give wound and ulcer care; offer immunisations, travel advice, contraceptive care and health promotion. They can also carry out cervical smears and chronic disease reviews. Our nurse assistants can perform blood tests and other basic health checks.

Healthcare Assistants

The HCA’s can monitor blood pressure, fit 24 hour ambulatory blood pressure machines, conduct NHS Health Checks, apply dressings, remove stitches, perform spirometry, dopplers and ECGs and process teledermatology referrals.

HRT

Please make an appointment to discuss this with the GPs and practice nurses.

Maternity Services

You will be referred to a midwife for your maternity care and appointments are arranged direct with them.

Post natal clinic – please make a double appointment with your GP as soon as you can after the birth of your baby. This appointment will include a 6 week check for your baby.

Joint Injections

if you have a painful joint, either from a long-term muscular injury or joint problem like rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis, in some cases an injection of steroid can give considerable pain relief and a better range of movement. Joint injections are only really suitable for long term problems, so acute joint injuries like a twisted knee or sprained wrist are not suitable but if you have a long term (2 or more months) joint problem and this is something you would like to consider the service is freely available. Please call and book an appointment.

Contraception

Contraceptive tablets:  our doctors are able to discuss and initiate many different forms of contraceptive tablet with you. Once you are settled on particular tablet you can arrange for a repeat prescription of your pill by filling out this form. Your form will  be reviewed by our nursing team who will decide whether a prescription can be printed and issued directly or whether they need an appointment to discuss it further (this could be by phone or face to face).

We are hoping in time that this will reduce the number of appointments for low risk pill repeats.

You will receive pill scripts for signing (hopefully in the main via the EPS system) as we hope to turn prescriptions around in 48 hours like we do with other requests for medications.

This is a trial and will be audited in the first month and beyond.

If you see a low risk pill user – please start to inform them of this process going forward for future requests.

Thanks

Contraceptive implant (nexplanon): A number of our doctors and nurses can fit the contraceptive implant. Once inserted it works for up to 3 years with no delay in return to normal cycles once removed. If you think you may be interested in this method of contraception please make an appointment to discuss it.

Intra-Uterine Devices (copper coil and hormonal coil)please make an appointment with your GP or nurse practitioner to further discuss this contraceptive option in the first instance. A subsequent appointment will then be made with a trained member of staff who can insert and remove these devices.

Cervical Smears

Please book an appointment with a practice nurse.

Child Immunisations

These are held regularly by our practice nursing team. You will be sent an appointment for your child’s immunisations. Please contact the surgery if this is not convenient.

Warfarin

Our healthcare assistants test your INR levels with a fingertip sample and give you your result straight away. You will then be given your new dosage requirements and your next appointment before you leave.

  • Asthma
  • Diabetes
  • Chronic Heart Disease
  • Stroke/TIA
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
